It Is Finished: The Three Words That Changed Everything

Three words. One breath. Everything settled.

"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit" (John 19:30). Most people read that as an ending. It wasn't. It was a verdict.

One Word in the Greek: Tetelestai

In John's original Greek, "it is finished" is a single word — tetelestai. And first-century readers knew exactly where they'd seen it before. Merchants stamped it on receipts: paid in full. Servants reported it when a task was complete. It wasn't the language of collapse. It was the language of completion.

Jesus didn't whisper "I'm finished." He announced "It is finished" — the mission, the debt, the whole rescue operation promised from Genesis 3 forward. John even notes he said it "knowing that everything had now been finished" (John 19:28). This was a King completing an assignment, not a victim running out of strength.

What Exactly Got Finished?

The debt. Every sin — past, present, future — stamped paid. Colossians 2:14 says God "canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness... nailing it to the cross." The receipt is the cross itself.

The striving. Every system that says "do more, be better, earn it" died at 3pm that Friday. You cannot add to a finished work. You can only receive it or refuse it.

The separation. The temple curtain — four inches thick, separating God from man — tore top to bottom at that moment (Matthew 27:51). Top to bottom, because God did the tearing.

Finished — But Not Over
