Custom Christian Shirts for Youth Groups, Camps and Church Events
September 30, 2026
Most church and youth group shirts fail the same way. Someone finds the cheapest blank available, the design goes on the front in one colour, forty shirts get handed out at camp, and by October they've become pyjamas.
That isn't a budget problem. It's a design and blank problem, and it's fixable without spending much more per head.
The one rule: make it wearable off the retreat
Ask a simple question before you approve any design — would a fifteen-year-old wear this to school in November?
If the answer is no, you haven't made merch. You've made a uniform for one weekend. The tells are almost always the same:
- The event date printed large on the front. Nobody wears last year's date.
- Clip-art crosses and doves.
- A thin 150gsm blank that loses shape after three washes.
- Five colours in the print, which drives cost up and looks dated fastest.
The fix is equally consistent: put the message on the front and the details on the back. A strong verse or phrase up front, the church or camp name small on the back or sleeve. Now it's a shirt they'd have chosen anyway, and your name still travels everywhere they go.
Choosing the blank
This matters more than the print. A great design on a bad blank still ends up as a rag.
- Weight: aim for 220gsm or heavier. Our heavyweight tees sit in the 220–250gsm range, which is where a shirt holds its shape.
- Fit: oversized reads current to teenagers and gives you more sizing forgiveness across a mixed group. Here's how oversized is supposed to fit.
- Print method: DTF and DTG both hold up through repeat washing far better than cheap vinyl, which cracks.
- Colour: faded black and washed tones hide wear and stains. White shirts at a summer camp are a decision you make once.
Sizing a group order without the guesswork
The single most common mistake is ordering to a normal retail size curve. Youth groups don't follow one.
A workable starting distribution for a mixed youth group of 40, assuming an oversized cut:
- S — 15%
- M — 30%
- L — 30%
- XL — 18%
- 2XL — 7%
Two pieces of advice worth more than that table. Collect actual sizes in a form — a two-minute Google Form beats any estimate. And order five to eight percent extra in M and L, because you will have late joiners, and because those two sizes absorb almost every sizing complaint.
Timelines — work backwards from the event
Everything is made to order, which means printed after the order is placed. Build your calendar backwards:
- Production: 2–7 business days
- Shipping: 3–7 business days standard
- Your buffer: at least 7 days
That's three weeks minimum before the event, and four is comfortable. For a summer camp, that means ordering in May, not the week before. Full shipping detail here.
Budget
Group pricing gets meaningfully better above 20 units. For a rough plan, budget $28–35 per head for a heavyweight oversized tee at group pricing, and $45–55 for hoodies.
A practical trick for tight budgets: let families opt in and pay their own way, with the group covering only those who need it. You'll usually get a higher take-up than a mandatory order, and nobody ends up with a shirt they didn't want.
Designs that already work
If you'd rather not start from scratch, several of our existing designs read well across a whole group without any customisation:
- Christ Is King — the least divisive, most-worn option.
- Kingdom Over Culture — good for a youth group building an identity. What it means.
- Armor of God — pairs naturally with a teaching series on Ephesians 6.
- I Will Fear No Evil — strong for camps and mission trips.
